Global market insights:

VC funding in Healthtech globally jumped 114% in 2021 compared to that in 2020.

“VC investment in the HealthTech space in Europe grew strongly in 2021 but remained significantly lower than that in the Americas. Companies in the medical device and equipment and telemedicine segments dominate the HealthTech space in Europe. China continues to command a significant share of VC funding in Asia, with telemedicine and enterprise HealthTech participants taking the lead. “

The number of mega-deals (>$100M) surged 2x to 186 in 2021 from 93 in 2020. The massive increase in deal volume and number of mega- deals established the HealthTech dealmaking boom is no longer a COVID-driven phenomenon.

In 2021, global companies aggregated $66.1B across 1828 deals.

Thirty-two companies became unicorns this year, surpassing 2020’s full-year total by 256%, with alternative care leading the way.

Female-founded companies collected $5.9B in VC investment this year, an 168% increase from 2020.

In 2020 there is a jump in mental health (MH) funding which can be attributed to three $90M+ deals raised by Lyra Health ($110M, employers/payers), Mindstrong ($100M, omni-channel), and Headspace ($94M, omni-channel).

Wellness & education has only had two companies raise $100M+ in a given year: Calm ($115M round in 2019) and Headspace (two 2020 deals, $93M and $48M).

US market insights:

In 2021, US companies aggregated $31.3B across 1154 deals.

The US remained the market leader in the HealthTech domain in 2021, keeping with the historical trend, accounting for 72% of the VC capital invested in HealthTech and 141 of the 186 mega deals (>$100M) registered globally in 2021.

In 2020, $4B+ was raised by US virtual and hybrid care companies.

Since 2019 15 HealthTech companies have become unicorns.

In 2020, $1B+ was the funding for US VC- backed mental health
companies.

This year, the US accounts for approximately 82% of global funding, with three states having crossed the $1B+ fundraising
mark: California (120 deals), New York (65 deals), and Massachusetts (45 deals).

Outside of the United States, Israel and China are the two emerging countries with interesting innovator and investor activities.
